A. but all, none, every, any, no, everything, everybody, nothing, nobody, anywhere 등등의 단어 뒤에서 ...을 제외하고 를 의미하는 전치사로 사용된다.
1. Nobody came but me.
2. I worked every day last week but Sunday.
3. All but one man were drowned.
4. Nobody has heard of it but me.
5. None but the brave deserves the fair.
6. He is nothing but a student.
7. Nothing remains but to die.
8. All but me fled before the enemy.
B. but 뒤에서는 to 없는 부정사를 사용한다.
1. That child does nothing but watch TV.
2. There is no one but knows it
3. There is no rule but has its exceptions.
but 전치사로 사용되면 그 뒤에 나타나는 명사는 목적격으로 요구되지만, 접속사로 사용되면 주격이 요구된다.
1. No one saw it but me. (전치사)
2. No one but I saw it. (접속사)
