 글의 어느 한 줄 끝에서 인쇄의 정판을 하기 위하여 한 단어를 음절로 구분하여 나누고자 하는 음절 다음에 하이픈을 긋고 나머지 음절들을 다음 줄로 넘기기 위하여 사용되며 이는 한 단어 라는 것을 의미 하게 된다.
