A.	say는 어떤 사람이 말한 내용을 그대로 되풀이 하는 즉 직접화법으로 말할 때 사용된다. 그리고 다음 1)의 예문에서 She said를 전달부(reporting clause)라 하고, said를 전달동사(reporting verb)라고 그리고 "Yes, I'll come."을 피전달부(reported speech)라고 한다.
1.	She said, "Yes, I'll come."
2.	"Hello," he said.

B.	say는 또한 어떤 사람이 말한 내용을 자신의 말로 바꾸어 즉 간접화법으로 말할 때도 사용된다.
1.	She said that she would come.
2.	She said in her letter that she'd come.

C.	say는 어떤 글, 그림 또는 장치가 ···라고 씌어져 있다, ···을 표현하다, ···을 나타낸다 라는 의미로 사용된다.
1.	The newspaper says it will rain.
2.	What does this painting say to you?
3.	What does your watch say?
4.	The clock says ten-thirty.

D.	tell은 아무에게 that 이하를 말하다 라는 간접화법의 형태로 사용된다.
1.	She told us that she would come.
2.	Did I tell you that your brother called?
3.	They told us the meeting was cancelled.

E.	tell + 목 + 목, tell + 목 + to + 목 형태로 아무에게 ···을 말하다 라는 간접화법의 형태로 사용된다.
