	복합어(compound words)는 네 가지 형태가 있다. 첫째로 an open compound; 둘째로, a hyphenated compound; 셋째로, a solid compound; 넷째로, a temporary compound가 있으며 영어에서 복합어는 이 네 가지 중 하나이다. 그러면 다음에서 의미(meaning)와 가독성(readability)에서 명확히 처리하려고 하는 복합어를 만드는 규칙들을 보자.

A.	기본적으로 접두사와 접미사는 단어와 연결될 때 같은 모음이 2개 이상이거나 같은 자음이 3개 이상이 되면 hyphenated compounds가 되는 것을 제외하고 solid compounds가 된다. 그러나 접두사와 접미사가 고유명사와 연결될 경우에는 hyphenated compounds가 된다.

	doll-like	shell-like

B.	동형 이의어(homographs)의 의미와 발음을 구분하기 위하여 어느 한쪽에 하이픈이 요구된다.
	recreation (enjoyment)	re-creation (new creation)
	release (to let go)	re-lease (to rent again)

C.	동사구가 명사나 형용사로 쓰이면 현대 영어 관용어법에 따라서 solid나 hyphenated compounds로, 그리고 본래의 동사로 쓰이는 경우는 각각의 단어로 사용된다.

	a line-up	line up the pencils
	a pushup	push up the window
	a sit-up	sit up in bed

D.	twenty-one부터 ninety-nine까지의 숫자 그리고 숫자가 앞에 오는 형용사 복합어는 hyphenated compounds가 된다.

E.	-fold가 글자와 결합되면 solid compounds로 숫자와 결합되면 hyphenated compounds로 된다.
	tenfold	10-fold

F.	-odd는 hyphenated compounds로 만 된다.

G.	숫자와 소유격 형태의 명사를 포함하는 수식 복합어는 open compounds로 사용된다.
	one week's pay	40 hours' work

H.	대문자로 시작되는 단어들의 복합 수식어는 하이픈으로 연결될 수 없다.

I.	과학용어가 복합어로 쓰이는 경우는 일반적으로 하이픈으로 연결되지 않는다.

J.	solid compound noun의 한 부분인 앞 단어만 어떤 형용사에 의해서 수식을 받으면 그 복합명사는 분리되어야 한다.
	schoolgirl	high-school girl
	class-room	fourth-class room

K.	명사 앞에서 부사와 형용사가 hyphenated compounds가 되지만 명사 뒤에서는 하이픈으로 연결될 수 없다.
	a much-improved situation	The situation is much improved.

L.	-ly로 끝나는 부사가 형용사와 함께 복합어를 이루는 경우에는 하이픈이 사용되지 않는다.
	a finely tuned mechanism	a carefully worked canvas

M.	any, every, no, some이 body, thing, where와 복합어가 되는 경우에는 solid compounds가 된다.
	anybody	nobody
	everything	somewhere

N.	all-, ex-(전의), half-, self-, quasi-(형용사로 될 경우)는 하이픈으로 연결된다.
	all-around	ex-president
	half-life	self-absorption
	self-defense	quasi-scientific

O.	수식어로 사용되는 구는 일반적으로 하이픈으로 연결된다.
	a happy-go-lucky person
	a here-today-gone-tomorrow attitude
